Take the Treadmill Apart First: A Few Lessons in Moving

“This is totally going to be worth it,” I told myself as the four of us crouched under the crushing weight of an intact treadmill, gingerly trying to maneuver it up a flight of stairs without doing any damage to it, the house, or ourselves. Yeah…we didn’t quite realize how bad this was going to be until we’d passed the point of no return. Maybe we should’ve just taken the treadmill apart…ah, hindsight.
This past weekend was moving day for my husband and me, as well as for our incredibly generous friends who donated much of their Sunday to moving our most heavy and unwieldy of possessions – the aforementioned treadmill, which did make it safely into our spare bedroom; a washing machine and dryer that had to be transported up a steep and narrow set of stairs, and a comfy couch we affectionately call “The Beast” because of its dreaded weight.
By the end of the day, I found myself sore and utterly defeated, surrounded by stacks of boxes with nothing in sight but days’ worth of unpacking. I told my husband in all seriousness that the next time we move (which would be the seventh move in just 6 years of marriage), we should give everything away to Goodwill and start all over again.
It’s not really such a bad idea, if you think about it. After all, your donations to Goodwill not only create revenue for our missions through retail sales, but they literally create jobs for the people who sort, price and shelf items in our stores. If you have a move coming up, take a hard look at your possessions before you start packing. Do you really need those knickknacks or that bookcase? Is it time for a new entertainment center? Take a few items to your local Goodwill store, where it will benefit the community. And on moving day, you’ll be glad you did!
Call 218-722-6351 in the Duluth area for home pickup of larger donation amounts.
